Although Dr. Gardner came highly recommended, I found my experience with him to be rather dismal. Dr. Gardner is a very pompous man. He did do a good job with my teeth, but not after a long ordeal. My teeth were not horribly misaligned: my top teeth were slightly pointed out (the result of sucking my thumb for too long as a child) and the bottom front teeth were very crowded. The problem with the bottom teeth was obvious to me, even in 6th grade, but when I visited Dr. Gardner, he said my bottom teeth were perfectly fine, but rather it was my top teeth that needed correction. He put braces on my top teeth for 6 months and took them off. For years I went back to Dr. Gardner for check ups to make sure everything was still fine. During one of those check ups FIVE YEARS LATER, he says, "you're going to need braces on your bottom teeth" but in order to fix the bottoms, we need to put braces BACK on your top teeth. He wanted to put braces on my top teeth for an additional 3-4 months before adding braces on my bottom teeth for another 5-8 months. You can imagine my frustration. I told him I refused to put braces on both top and bottom and he got really angry and frustrated with me, talking down to me. Finally he agreed to file down my bottom teeth so that I could just get braces on the bottoms for 5-8 months. After getting the braces off, he put a metal bracket behind my bottom front teeth to maintain the form of those teeth. My dentist said that that was causing decay and that he should take it off and give me a retainer, but Dr. Gardner got really defensive saying how his children have the same bracket and he would never advise them to take it off, blah blah blah. Needless to say, that checkup I did not get the bracket off. A year later I came back and he finally agreed to take it off. He is recommended by many in Yorktown, but I say use your own judgement. I personally would NOT recommend him. He's pompous and isn't used to people questioning him. So if you think that your bottoms need work but he thinks it's just your tops that need work - get him to do the bottoms so that you don't waste the time and money that he did for me!
