Be careful if you don't have an extensive dental plan or an extensively funded bank account. It's disappointing to say, as this dentist is quite likeable when you talk to him, but I was shocked by the billing. A simple Google search will show that the average cost of a filling maxes out at around $250, unless you're getting gold fillings. Dr. Shah charges $395 for simple composite fillings, far above the national and state averages. However, his office is not transparent about these costs. This ensures that his office can receive the maximum amount of money for each procedure from the insurance companies. The insurance companies will not cover the full amount due to the price being above the average. The only positive is that his office did not try to charge out the full difference, which would have been completely unmanageable. Instead, they charged $300, which didn't sound horrible at the time, until I realized the full reality of the situation. Two simple visits (#1- cleaning, exam, and x-rays and #2 - fillings) ate my entire yearly benefit with more fillings left to complete. I now have zero money left on my plan to shop around at other dentists and am basically back in the position of an uninsured individual thanks to these two visits and Karing Dental's sky high billing practices. I had a feeling something was odd when I had to pay $300 out of pocket at the second appointment and was not given a print out or itemized receipt. I was told I would receive one in my email. I did receive an email, but it simply said that there had been a $300 charge without explanation, after care instructions, or any itemized billing. When I saw the explanation of benefits from BCBSIL, my heart sank. I knew my gut feeling had been correct. Unfortunately, I do have many small fillings that still need to be completed. I asked the office what we could work out, as the dentist had previously assured me that he could get the work done within the limits of my insurance. He definitely made it sound as if all of the fillings could be completed within my benefits, not just the two visits I received. The billing rate for cleaning, exam, and x-rays was also astoundingly high and included 2 x-rays types that I do not recall them doing. I believe the bitewing x-rays were done. I do not recall being shown the 2 additional ones that were charged, nor do I recall them taking any separate x-rays from that visit. My insurance covers 2 cleanings and exams per year, and the wording makes it sound as though these procedures should be covered separately, not within my benefit max. Unfortunately, that is not how this was billed out through this office either. I tried to resolve this issue through the office by trying to work out a reasonable price for the remainder of my dental work. After waiting for a call back with a price on the remaining dental work, I was told I would be receiving a "great deal", $250/filling for the remaining fillings. Now remember, $250 is actually the highest average price for composite fillings. As a comparison, my insurance actually paid out $230 per filling for the fillings I had completed previously, as this was the maximum allowed. So, this "great deal" is actually more expensive than the intial round of fillings, and I would be paying that with zero insurance benefits remaining. I am hoping we can find some kind of resolution. I will update this review if we can work out something that is fair and reasonable. However, right now I am left feeling frustrated, disappointed, overwhelmed, and in need of dental care that I no longer have insurance benefits left to cover thanks to this office. Please be careful when choosing dental care, and aim for an office that is very transparent about billing and prices so you don't end up in my position..
