I am writing this in hopes that any current or future patient can make a more informed decision as to the type of work that Bill Fan and his office staff perform. I’d encourage anyone to carefully consider alternative options available to them and to research long term effects of major and minor dental procedures. I saw Bill Fan at Mission Valley Smiles for over two years. After getting cleanings performed every 6 months, he abruptly told me that I had developed quite a few cavities. While I was hesitant to get anything done, I decided to get 2 fillings a couple years later. My gums had been experiencing isolated pain periodically and I thought perhaps this was due to the “cavities” that Bill Fan had noted. After a few months following the procedure, my gum pain was still present and my teeth were now hurting where my fillings had been done. I decided to see another dental group to get a second opinion and check out the work that had been completed. Immediately upon seeing me, they were appalled at the fillings that Bill Fan had put in my teeth. The fillings were enormous, jagged, leaking, and ultimately “unnecessary” as my new dentist would tell me. He also stated that Bill Fan had done what they refer to as a “love tap” which is a nice way of saying that he had hit my neighboring tooth with the drill while performing the fillings, which removed a chuck of a healthy tooth’s surface. Furthermore, when my new dentist x-rayed my teeth, I saw that there were 3 fillings, instead of the 2 that had been contracted. Not only had Bill Fan misdiagnosed my condition (which was a simple vitamin deficiency) and done a poor job, but he also performed more work than what I legally agreed to. After following up for over three months, Bill Fan’s office staff refused to address my patient inquiries and my demands for an explanation. I wrote multiple emails and called the office directly on a number of occasions. I don’t expect any form of reply at this point until I bring a legal suit against Bill Fan for his dental malpractice and negligence. They say fillings don’t pay the bills for dentists, but the eventual necessary procedures following a filling do. What Bill Fan did to my teeth has guaranteed the need for crowns and possible root canals. This misdiagnosis has caused me unnecessary pain, worry, and financial hardship. I hope that my story can shed light on the dishonest practices of Bill Fan and his office staff. If you’ve had a similar experience, I encourage you to write about it to inform others. I also urge you to check the reported procedure with your insurance. As I later found out, Bill Fan had indicated that he had given me silver fillings, which are costlier than the composite (white) fillings he had actually used. This is insurance fraud and yet another example of the immoral practices that Bill Fan and his staff engage in. Link to my before and after photos—> https://imgur.com/gallery/Vk9Bpdf
