My husband and I are new to Rolla, and we had to find an office to check his wisdom teeth to see if they were coming in. My husband has Aetna health insurance, which we are new to. I wanted to be certain that our health insurance plan was covered, so I called the Wedgewood Dental office twice one month before my husband's appointment. The ladies I talked to on the phone were very nice and informative about their procedures. I was hopeful that we could make this dental office our home dentist. However, I spoke with the woman who handles the insurance claims and checks policies. I asked her very specifically if she had checked my husband's Aetna policy and asked her how much would be covered. I also specifically asked why my card said no provider had been selected, to which she responded that was just referring to a "preferred provider" and would not affect our insurance coverage. She quoted percentages of how much we could expect to be covered by Aetna, but said that we had to pay the charges upfront and then insurance would reimburse us. But when my husband went for his appointment yesterday, AFTER the comprehensive exam and x-rays, they told him that they discovered we had a DMO plan (which they had never heard of) and that insurance would not cover any of their services. If Wedgewood Dental could have told me this information BEFORE the services had been provided, I could have acted accordingly.I understand that insurance companies are difficult to work with, but I still wish we had the accurate information that I tried to find weeks before we were put into this position. UPDATE: I contacted Cindy, the office manager, who spoke with my husband yesterday. She explained that they had many patients who had Aetna coverage, but this was the first time they had ever seen a DMO plan, which means that insurance pays a handful of select dentists and doctors for their service, whether you actually use that dentist/doctor or not. Wedgewood Dental also had no way of knowing that we had that plan until the dentist submits paperwork during the appointment and they receive a code. We will now drop this insurance plan or have to find a new dentist, but Wedgewood Dental did their best, considering how insurance companies don't give them accurate information.
