When I was a teenager, I was told my wisdom teeth needed to be surgically removed as they were impacted. I was terrified and absolutely refused to have it done. Several years later at 27, my new dentist told me once again that my wisdom teeth needed to come out. I asked my dentist for a recommendation and he referred me to Brazos Valley Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. He told me I would be "Pleasantly Surprised" and that all of the surgeons were fantastic. At my initial appointment, Dr. Kennady was very thorough with explaining the process and the risks. She used my x-rays and the computer to help explain the process, which helped my understanding greatly as I am a visual learner. She was also very patient with answering my many questions about complexity, recovery, did waiting too long make the process more difficult for me?. Have I already mentioned that I asked a ton of questions? I walked into that meeting feeling anxious and left feeling like it wouldn't be too bad. The day of surgery itself was the most nervous & panicked I have ever been. I've never had stitches, let alone sedation & surgery - and I could not stop telling the staff how freaked-out I was. They were all extremely sweet, understanding, and calming. They explained (simply) everything they were doing. Even putting the IV in had me stressed-out. They joked-around with me and distracted me with questions - which I recall not providing very sensible answers to. As the sedation kicked in, one of the staff members soothingly rubbed my arms, which amazingly did wonders to comfort me. It's really the little things that impressed me. The next thing I knew, they were waking me up, handing me ice packs, telling me it was all done and I did great, and then wheeling me out the door to my ride. I've always wondered what kind of person I would be coming out of sedation, but they did such a fantastic job that my drug-addled brain could only do 1 thing and that was thank everyone.. PROFUSELY. I remember thanking Dr. Kennady, the nurses, the staff, everyone. My recovery was amazing and I attribute it to how great a surgeon Dr. Kennady was. I only took 3 doses of the prescription pain medicine and managed the rest with ibuprofen. I had very minimal bleeding and no bruising. I did have a couple of questions during the first 3 days of recovery and I called BVOMS to ask if some of them were normal (nose bleeds, sneezing, etc.). I fully expected to speak with one of the staff members to have my questions answered as I knew Dr. Kennady was really busy. However, when the staff member wasn't sure about her answer, she had Dr. Kennady call me back! It's been 10 days since my surgery, and I can't say enough great things about my experience. They really were world-class & I have to admit that my dentist was right.. I was in fact pleasantly surprised.
